Celtics-Lakers set to open another chapter in illustrious history of NBA Finals Game 7s

This is supposed to be about glory, celebrity, immortality and all that rot.

But there’s a flip side, and it isn’t always glorious.

“The culture of Game 7s,” Pat Riley said more than a decade ago, “is one of pure intensity and desperation. But mostly, it’s about the fear of failure.”

The most frantic, nerve-jangling and special moments in sports are when the championships are decided, and it happens tonight at Staples Center in Los Angeles, where the Lakers and Celtics will play the 105th Game 7 in NBA playoff history — but just the third such deciding game of an NBA Finals in 22 years.

One team will become a champion, the other will be relegated to a crowded avenue where failures are the principal tenants. But both are feeling pretty much the same thing before the clock strikes 9 in the East.

Dick Motta, who coached nearly 2,000 games over 25 seasons, compared the pressure to the execution scene from a 1930s melodrama: “It was just like James Cagney going to the electric chair,” the Washington coach said, recalling the atmosphere in Seattle prior to Game 7 in 1978.
“I told everyone, ‘It’s too bad we can’t have a lot of little bottles here, take the corks off and close them, and sell this atmosphere for a quarter a shot.’”

Now we find out who can withstand it.

Jackson points to Gasol-Garnett as key

LOS ANGELES -- Phil Jackson loves the game within the game. Heading into Thursday's Game 1 of the NBA Finals with the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics, one piques his curiosity more than the rest.

"I'm intrigued by the [Kevin] Garnett-Pau Gasol matchup. I think that's a really good one," he said Wednesday after the Lakers completed practice.

"Kevin is like the force of [Boston's] defense, he's really the glue that kind of holds their defense together with his activity level, his ability to help and recover on guys," Jackson continued. "Pau is the guy we have to have be a part of the scoring combo with Kobe. So he has to provide some of that for us in this series against probably one of the top defenders in the game."

Gasol's performance was generally seen as disappointing during the 2008 Finals, in which he averaged 14.7 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 3.3 assists in six games, facing primarily Garnett and Kendrick Perkins. Like the rest of his teammates, Gasol had a subpar Game 6, making four field goals and turning the ball over five times in 32 minutes as the Lakers lost 131-92 and Boston clinched the title.

Garnett was the Defensive Player of the Year in 2008. Since, he's struggled with injuries, undergoing surgery to his right knee in May 2009.

Still, he's still a formidable opponent, says Gasol.

"I see a little bit of difference [since the surgery], but he's still very effective and he's still one of their team leaders," he said. "You've got to respect everything that he does and brings to the table. The leadership, the aggressiveness, and he's going to compete no matter what. He's proven that through the injury."

Celtics smother Orlando for 3-0 series lead

BOSTON (Reuters) - The Boston Celtics tightened their grip on the Eastern Conference finals with a crushing 94-71 win over the Orlando Magic on Saturday.

The Celtics lead the best-of-seven series 3-0 and could wrap up a trip to the NBA finals as soon as Monday on home court.

"They're playing hard, they're playing together, they're playing like a team that wants to win a championship," Orlando center Dwight Howard told reporters.

Fielding a starting lineup of battle-tested veterans, the Celtics are hoping to reproduce the form that helped them to a 17th NBA title in 2008.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers, however, downplayed comparisons.

"We haven't scratched what we did in '08," Rivers told reporters.

Six Celtics reached double figures in the team's sixth consecutive playoff win. Forward Glen Davis top-scored with 17 points off the bench, while forward Paul Pierce added 15 points and guard Ray Allen 14.

"It's unselfish basketball," said Rivers. "We keep talking about letting the ball find the open guy. You don't have to find it yourself." Continue reading

The Orlando Magic played harder Tuesday and they played better. And they still couldn’t beat the Boston Celtics.

So, even though all things are possible, some are more possible than others, and a comeback by the Magic isn’t one of them. They’re down 0-2 and going on the road against a veteran team of champions.

It’s over.

You don’t lose the first two at home in the NBA conference finals and come back to win the series. You can do that in hockey and baseball, but you can’t do it in basketball unless you’re a great, great team, and Orlando does not meet that description.

The only thing that can save Orlando now is a miracle, and it would have to be a good one, too, something biblical, and none of that New Testament stuff. No, this calls for a fire-and-brimstone, sun-standing-still-in-the-sky Old Testament miracle. Or two.

That makes an Orlando comeback as likely as Sarah Palin declaring her undying love of Keith Olbermann or a border collie swearing off chasing Frisbies. Continue reading here...

ORLANDO, Fla. — The hair is a little grayer. The ankles and knees no longer so sturdy. Even with a roster full of aging superstars, the Boston Celtics are still standing tall.

Too old to chase a title? Not these days.

Ray Allen scored 25 points, Paul Pierce had 22 and the Celtics used smothering defense to beat the Orlando Magic 92-88 on Sunday in the Eastern Conference finals opener.

Hampered by injuries, the Celtics literally limped their way through parts of the regular season. All that seems a distant memory now.

"I honestly say we lost ourselves," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "I think we've found ourselves again."

Rasheed Wallace added 13 points as the Celtics built a 20-point lead, then held on late to snap Orlando's 14-game winning streak. They held the Magic to 41 percent shooting — 22 percent from 3-point range — in displaying that rough and tough defense that was once their staple.

"There were stretches in the season, we know each other so well now, where we were becoming less patient with each other," Allen said. "We were getting on each other a little too much. We can take it, but we respected each other.

"When we started the playoffs, we said teams are going to hit us, they're going to attack us. But when somebody scores on us, which they will, we go get the ball out and come back."

Vince Carter had 23 points and Jameer Nelson finished with 20 for Orlando, which cut the lead to two in the final seconds but simply ran out of time, looking rusty after a six-day layoff. Dwight Howard was limited to 13 points and 12 rebounds, nowhere near the dominant force the Magic need to win a title.

Game 2 in the best-of-seven series is Tuesday night in Orlando.

Celtics vs Magic

Magic has the home court advantage all through out the playoffs(even in NBA finals) because they have the second best record in the NBA regular season. But Celtics proved that they don't need home court advantage to win a series. The Celtics dumped the Cavaliers 4-2 while the Magic gave no mercy in sweeping the Atlanta Hawks of their own series.

For Orlando to win this series, their shooters should play well to free up the interior defence of the Celtics. Dwight Howard will really have a hard time because Kevin Garnet is healthy. Lets watch out for this two.

For Boston, I think they have the advantage because of experience and the good news for them is their Big Three are all healthy. But I still believe that Rajon Rondo is still the catalyst of this team. He should play well like what he did in the Cavaliers series.

Prediction: Celtics 4-2

Los Angeles Lakers vs Phoenix Suns

Lakers reached the Conference finals for the third straight year. They swept the Utah Jazz and the Suns swept the Spurs also. Suns pick-n-roll offense will be in trouble because the Lakers has the formula to stop it(look what they did in Jazz series). But Steve Nash will be the main catalyst of the Suns, he should distribute the ball well and be aggressive in defense.

For the Lakers, they should tighten their defense and cover all the shooters well. Lakers have all the advantage especially their twin towers. This series is fun to watch and the Lakers are very eager to revenge their playoffs losses to the Suns. Kobe Bryant will still be the go to guy of the Lakers.

Prediction: Lakers 4-1

Boston Celtics eliminates Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Kevin Garnet carries the Celtics to the Eastern Conference finals against the Orlando Magic. He scored 22 pts in 11-19 fgs and added 10 rebounds in leading the Celtics against the Cavs, 94-85. Lebron James scored 27 pts but he had 9 turnovers.

It is the second straight year that Lebron James season ends in a lossing cause. The question now is will Lebron stays in Cleveland? Maybe yes or maybe no. But I think Cavs should replace their coach, Mike Brown is a great coach during NBA regular season but he is awful during the playoff. Lebron James deserved to stay in Cavaliers but he need a great coach that inspires the team during NBA playoffs.

For Boston, their championship form is back and Orlando Magic will be in trouble. It will be a great Eastern Conference Finals series that will start on Sunday afternoon.

Rejuvenated Celtics ready for LeBron, Cavs

Following yearlong plan perfectly, former champs won't be a pushover

The Boston Celtics said all along the object wasn’t to win the Eastern Conference or set any regular-season records. It was to have everybody healthy and ready for a playoff run and another shot at a title.

We didn’t believe them, not really. It sounded too much like Pee-wee Herman crashing his bike and popping up to say, “I meant to do that.”

But we can believe them now, not because of anything they said, but because of the way they swatted away the Miami Heat in five games in the opening round of the playoffs. This was a fourth-seeded Boston team against a fifth-seeded Miami squad, but it looked more like a No. 1 against a No. 8, as complete a mismatch as we’ve seen in the first round.

Atlanta Hawks clinched their third straight trip to the playoffs. Thanks to the buzzer beater dunk of Josh Smith. Officialls review it and the dunk went in with 0.01 seconds remaining.

“I knew it was close,” Smith said. “I just crashed it. I looked and the ball was there. Joe’s a good shooter, and I knew it wouldn’t be much off.”



Atlanta snapped a six-game losing streak against the Magic dating back to the opener of the 2008-09 season.

Charlotte Bobcats rout Minesota Timberwolves 108-95
Jackson hit 4 of 6 from the three point line and scored 37 points to help the Bobcats. Jackson revealed that he was being bothered by a bruised ligament in his left index fingers.
Al Jefferson led the Timberwolves, 26 points and they end their road trip this season with a disappointing 5-32 record.

Wizards loss 13th straight
Danny Granger scored 31 points to help the Indiana Pacers hand Washington Wizards its 13th straight game loss. The last time the Wizards won was against New Jersey Nets last Feb 28, 2010.

Coach Flip Saunders response about their consecutive losses.

“I don’t think our guys are looking at that,” he said. “We’re looking at trying to be competitive and look ahead. The reason we’re getting beat right now is because other teams are better than us. We’re not very good right now.”

Utah Jazz beats Toronto Raptors 113-87
The Raptors experienced their second straight game blowout loss at home. Deron Williams helps the Jazz with his 18 points and 16 assists. Raptors missed the service of Hedo Turkoglo in the second half due to stomach virus.

Celtics back in the playoffs
The Boston Celtics beat the Denver Nuggets 113-99 and clinched their playoffs spot. Paul Pierce lead the Boston Celtics with 27 points. Pierce rebounded from the 5 points performance against the Denver last Feb. 21.

“The Paul Pierce you saw out in Denver wasn’t the Paul Pierce that usually shows up to play,” he said. “Right now I’m as healthy as I’ve been all year and this is our time to start playing well.”

New Jersey Nets Win
Lopez helps Nets in their quest to avoid the stigma as the NBA's worst team. Lopez scored 26 points and carried the team, beating the Sacramento Kings 93-79.

Philadelphia 76ers beats Milwaukee Bucks 101-86
Rokie Jrue Holiday scored 15 points and had seven assists as the Sixers stun the Bucks.

Thunder beats Rockets 122-104
James Harden returned in the lineup for the Thunder after two weeks of absence. He help the Thunder with his 23 points, together with Durant who scored 25 points carried the Thunder over the Rockets.

“I just wanted to come out and get my swag back like it was before I left,” said Harden, who had his fourth 20-point game of the season and his first since Dec. 7

Cavs slip past over Hornets 105-92
Behind the good performance of Lebron James, the Cavs beat the Hornest and stays at the top of NBA standing. James scored 38 points on 15 of 22 shooting. He even turned his left ankle in the final seconds of the first half. At the second half, he started and did not show any sign of ill effect.

“LeBron’s 6-8, and if you double team him, he’s going to throw over the defense. He can definitely see over the defense,” Cavaliers coach Mike Brown said. “He can burn you either way. LeBron had an outstanding game but the guys around him played extremely well feeding off of the double teams … and the attention that he drew.”

Lakers won over Spurs 92-83
Behind Kobe Bryant 24 points, as the Lakers win seven straight. Artest also played a good defense in the second half that triggers the Lakers offense.
Manu Ginobili scored 24 points in a losing cause for the Spurs.

Warriors won over Grizzlies 128-110
Stephen Curry scored 30 points and the Warriors spoils Grizzlies bid of a playoff spot. He also had 11 assists. Grizzlies Zach Randolph scored 16 points but left the ball game in the third quarter with a sore ankle.

Celtics beat Lakers with Allen's 24 points and stop on Fisher's shot at buzzer

LOS ANGELES — Ray Allen scored 12 of his 24 points in the third quarter and made 10 of his first 11 shots, leading the Boston Celtics to an 87-86 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night.

It was the defending NBA champions' first loss in five games since Kobe Bryant went down with a sprained left ankle.

Kendrick Perkins had 13 points and 14 rebounds, Kevin Garnett had 13 points and eight boards and Rajon Rondo added 14 points and 11 assists for the Celtics, who were busy before the game. They acquired guard Nate Robinson and Marcus Landry from the New York Knicks in exchange for Eddie House, J.R. Giddens, Bill Walker and a future conditional second-round pick.

Pau Gasol scored 22 points, and Lamar Odom had 13 points and 14 rebounds for Los Angeles.

Bryant, the league's fourth-leading scorer, remained in the trainer's room getting treatment on his sprained left ankle while his teammates rallied against a defence that came in allowing a league-low 93.7 points per game.

The Lakers had won the previous three meetings with the Celtics after losing the 2008 finals to them in six games. On Jan. 13, they beat Boston 90-89 on the parquet floor, after Bryant hit a jumper with 7.3 seconds left to give the Lakers their only lead of the second half and Allen missed three-point shot at the final horn.

The Lakers went 4:48 without a basket until Odom's layup with 2:26 to play. Garnett missed a 21-footer with 51 seconds left, but the Lakers lost possession on a turnover by Gasol. The Lakers got the ball back and Odom missed a driving layup with 2.2 seconds to go.

The groans from the sellout crowd turned to audible sighs of relief when everyone realized the Lakers had called a time out just before Odom made his move to the basket. But the ensuing inbounds pass from Ron Artest to Derek Fisher resulted in a missed 21-footer by Fisher at the buzzer with Allen's hand in his face.

The Celtics were leading 66-55 when Garnett picked up his fourth foul and went to the bench with 8:27 left in the third quarter. He was replaced by Rasheed Wallace, who received a technical foul from referee Bob Delaney with 3:10 left in the period for shoving Gasol as the two power forwards jockeyed for position.

Garnett didn't return to the floor until 7:53 remained in the game. By then, the Lakers were eight points into a 13-0 run triggered by two layups by Sasha Vujacic and capped by Andrew Bynum's 20-footer. The basket gave Los Angeles an 84-80 lead with 7:14 to play, but Perkins' layup put Boston back in front to stay with 4:24 remaining.

The Celtics shot 55 per cent in the first half to build a 53-48 margin. The Lakers took their first lead of the game, 34-32, when Odom sank a pair of free throws with 9:39 left in the second quarter.

Boston responded with a 15-2 run capped by Allen's fastbreak dunk with 5:09 left in the second quarter, after Rondo stole the ball from Gasol. Rondo received a technical foul for taunting the Lakers after Allen's basket, and Fisher converted the free throw.

Shannon Brown beat the first-quarter buzzer with a three-pointer that trimmed Boston's lead to 29-27. It was his fourth straight start in place of Bryant, after setting career highs with 27 points and 10 rebounds in Tuesday's 104-94 win over Golden State. Read More

Nate Robinson a help, but is it enough? Celtics' other issues remain after deadline deal with Knicks

It is an article of faith that in evaluating almost any trade, you give the thumbs-up to the team that ended up with the best player. Advantage Boston.

As much as we loved Eddie House -- and we will never forget his great performance in Game 4 of the 2008 NBA Finals -- he is the second-best player in this trade. The best is the one coming to Boston, the dynamic, if occasionally high maintenance Nate Robinson.

No, Robinson doesn't address the team's rebounding issues. No, he really doesn't address their turnover issues, either. But he brings an attitude, a feistiness and a fearlessness that is most welcome and, some might say, much needed for this group at this point in time.

He can score in bunches. He can penetrate and handle the ball. He may be 5-foot-9 but he plays a lot bigger and can be a thorn on defense. And he's got six years on House on a team getting a bit long in the tooth.

The Knicks didn't want him and we will hear volumes about that in the upcoming days. Coach Mike D'Antoni hated Robinson because he felt Robinson was a selfish, me-firster. Robinson was benched for basically the entire month of December -- on a team going nowhere. (Had his contract not been up at the end of the year, he probably would have gotten some showcasing time.)

So, you might be wondering, is he a human carcinogen or merely a frustrated competitor? Consider the situation from whence he came: the Knicks of now are a mess, a joke, placing all of their chips on this summer's free agent table. Sure, Robinson exacerbated things with some of his inexcusable antics. But, in that respect, he brings to mind someone else who also had a "reputation" before arriving in Boston: Rajon Rondo.

Rondo's college coach, Tubby Smith, practically held a party when he learned Rondo was leaving school after two years. Rondo was also seen as high maintenance, impossible to coach, selfish and determined to go his own way at his own pace. Even as an NBA rookie, Rondo was told by Doc Rivers that his teammates hated playing with him.

But on a team steeled in veterans, Rondo grew up and he now is arguably the team's best player. That's one huge benefit of not trading Ray Allen; he has been Rondo's mentor since he arrived in Boston and Rondo leans on him. Robinson won't be able to pull off any of the you-know-what he pulled off in New York because the Celtics won't stand for it. It's sort of like the Stephon Marbury situation and, in the end, it was Marbury's game, not his behavior, that suffered. He didn't return. Robinson will be a free agent next summer. There's no guarantee he'll be back, either.

Of greater concern to Celtics fans has to be that while they may have made a minor roster improvement, the Cavaliers, the team they are trying to catch, appear to have made a major upgrade with the addition of Antawn Jamison. He gives them another scorer, another rebounder, your prototype "stretch 4" in today's hoop parlance. And, if Zydrunas Ilgauskas returns as predicted, the cost of the deal will be only felt by owner Dan Gilbert, not coach Mike Brown. Everyone of import will be there come playoff time. Read More
